Product Labeling poisons in our foods and drinks!!!!!
CANCER, obesity, diabetes, irritable bowel, acid reflux, and more are caused by the fda not protecting american citizens!!!

ArFood allergies are dangerous with fake product labeling - FDA lobbying, GMO labeling

Well, I do not know what happened but this morning I thought I might need to go to the emergency room again! I felt like I was having a heart attack, my hands were and still are very sore all the way up to my shoulders, and they were very swollen this morning but they are less swollen now. My head still feels really weird and I'm not seeing well.

I had a massive distended tummy like I was 9 1/2 months pregnant yesterday this is what i ate:

Lunch = leftover prime rib meat with au jus, mashed potatoes, and green beans, with a microwaved so it became hard dinner roll.

Dinner = same thing but no green beans, no au jus, and no bread.

Snack = 1/2 coffee cup of Kuerig hot cocoa with spray whipped cream and a TINY splash of Stop and Shop brand liquid "non-dairy" creamer

These people who invent these "non-dairy" products then LOAD them up with milk proteins, which is the worst part for milk allergies need to be shot. It should be illegal to almost kill people with false packaging.

I am allergic to milk proteins and they are hidden in everything!

I know those non-dairy creamers make me ill so I only used a tiny splash. I've never gotten that ill from a product labeled non-dairy before though. They must have A LOT of milk protein in that generic brand in order for this to happen.

There NEEDS to be legal repercussions for this crap they are all pulling with shady product labeling!

Sodium castigate, whey, lute in, those are just a few vie learned by getting extremely ill that I am highly allergic to and they are in everything

wheat grass, fennel, lactic acid are some other things that really ruin my ability to function

Did you know that there are products on the market for sale in stores that KILL PEOPLE, give people strokes, heart attacks, serious medical illnesses, but that the lobbyists petition the FDA to keep those DANGEROUS PRODUCTS on the market and the FDA PROTECTS THOSE RICH BUSINESSES?!!!!!! They have a marketing equation that they use to decide how valuable your life and mine are. If the cost of our lives (and the lawsuits they have to pay us) are less expensive than the amount of profits rich people will make, then they keep the dangerous products on the market!!!!!!!

The FDA keeps products on the market if they "benefit" more people than they kill. This is why the diet industry is a multi-billion dollar business (and why they pull this crap with foods, poisoning our foods, using man-made techniques to make people fat, like partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, pesticides, steroids, etc). Products like ephedrine (KNOWN by the FDA to KILL people, cause strokes and heart attacks in HUNDREDS of people over the years) is in diet pills, anti-fungus medications, and antihistamines for one reason - because they can get away with murder paying off the families of the victims in order to continue hurting even more people, lining FDA, government, and scientist pockets with billions of dollars in blood money.

This is dangerous and horrible fact about how our government is being run. American citizens' lives are in danger with lies on product labels that are misleading on purpose to make money off hurting people intentionally.

11 Food Label Lies Do Not spend extra money buying into marketing hype and misinformation. Look for food claims and labels you can trust.by EMILY MAIN NOVEMBER 9, 2011

No added growth hormones
The lie: Usually, you'll see this claim in ads for chicken, turkey, or even pork, along with milk and beef labels. Why is it misleading? The U.S. Department of Agriculture doesn't allow farmers to feed hormones to poultry or pork. In fact, if you read the fine print, any poultry or pork product that is advertised as "hormone free" must legally be accompanied by the disclaimer "Federal regulations prohibit the use of hormones." Producers of those meats use antibiotics instead, which speed growth in the same way as hormones; the USDA calls this "increasing feed efficiency." Even when you see this label on beef or dairy products--products where hormones are legally allowed--it hasn't been verified by a third party, so you're really taking the food marketer's word for it.

To get the real thing: Buy certified organic meat and dairy, which are free of both added growth hormones and antibiotics, and organic poultry products. Or, buy from small farmers whom you can ask about how they raise and medicate their animals.

Natural
The lie: The implications of this label can make anyone feel good about their farm-fresh, straight-from-the-dirt...can of powdered lemonade. Unfortunately, there isn't any official definition of "natural," except when it comes to meat. The USDA has defined it as any product "containing no artificial ingredient or added color and is only minimally processed (a process which does not fundamentally alter the raw product)." Their definition doesn't, however, make any statements about how animals were raise or whether the animals were fed hormones or antibiotics. The Food and Drug Administration, which regulates fruits, vegetables, and most processed foods, doesn't have any official definition for the term. Essentially, a product can be as "natural" as the manufacturer would like you to believe and may contain genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and artificial sweeteners like high-fructose corn syrup.

To get the real thing: Again, buying organic is your best protection. Alternatively, you can simply buy more fruits, vegetables, grains, and nuts; the fewer ingredients involved, the less you have to worry about any of them being artificial.

Grass-fed
The lie: See this label, and bucolic scenes of grassy fields with healthy, happy cows probably come to mind. Think again. "Grass-fed" is a term that's sort-of regulated by the USDA, who has defined it to mean that an animal ate 100 percent grass and no corn or soy and had continuous access to pasture throughout its life. But the USDA allows anyone to use that terminology, provided a meat producer submits documentation saying that's what he or she is doing; no farm inspections are required to meet the definition. Furthermore, before this rule went into place in 2006, anyone could use the term "grass-fed" on food products, and those people were grandfathered in under the new rule, whether they meet the requirements or not. A final kicker? The rule applies only to cattle and other ruminant animals, but you'll often see it on packages for pork or chicken--animals that can't survive on a grass-only diet.

To get the real thing: If you see the words "U.S. Grass-fed" accompanied by a "USDA Process Verified" shield, you're in the clear. USDA verification requires actual farm visits, and it means that someone other than a farmer has witnessed that animals are eating grass. Or look for the American Grassfed Association certification, which has even stricter standards on "grass-fed" than the USDA. A third option: Buy your meat at the farmer's market, where the farmer who raised the meat can give you a detailed rundown of what his or her animals eat every day and who will allow you to visit the farm yourself.

Antibiotic-free
The lie: Like "no added hormones," "antibiotic free" is a meaningless term, and it's actually illegal to use it on packages, according to the USDA. Manufacturers often skirt the issue by using phrases like "raised without antibiotics" or "no antibiotics administered." Furthermore, some meat producers use those phrases while dousing animals with anti-microbials, drugs that work identically to antibiotics but are defined differently by the FDA. And from an animal welfare perspective, "antibiotic free" isn't always a good thing. Operators of big concentrated animal feeding operations may overuse antibiotics to fatten up chickens and hogs faster, but small farmers save antibiotics for when animals get sick, as they should be used.

To get the real thing: Under organic regulations, any animal treated with antibiotics must be removed from organic production (it can still be sold as a conventionally raised product, though), and purchasing organic meat and dairy is the only way to truly avoid them. Or, find a local farmer who uses antibiotics on his or her herd responsibly.

Nutrition Facts The lie: The FDA allows food manufacturers to use averages for the calorie counts, salt content and fat grams (and any other information on the Nutrition Facts panel) of their foods, and food manufacturers are allowed to be off by as much as 20 percent. So that 500-calorie frozen dinner you're eating could have as many as 600 calories. If every meal you ate had 100 extra calories, you'd gain an additional 30 pounds this year. Another sticky label? Trans fats. The FDA allows manufacturers to put "0" if the amount of trans fats per serving is below .5 grams. "That's a quarter of a day's worth," says Jayne Hurley, RD, senior nutritionist at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, who notes that 2 grams is what health experts suggest should be your daily limit.

To get the real thing: Avoid packaged foods. The foods without "Nutrition Facts" labels--fruits and vegetables--are the healthiest foods. When you do buy them, read ingredient labels, not nutrition labels, to avoid trans fats. And avoid any product with partially hydrogenated oils listed. "If there's no partially hydrogenated oil, the trans-fat content really is zero," Hurley says.

DORITOS START FIRES!!!!!!

FOOD LABEL LIE #6
Doritos

The Crime: On its nutrition label, Frito-Lay reassures us that Doritos contain zero gram of trans fats. Problem is, it is a blatant lie!

The Evidence: Partially hydrogenated oil is the primary source of trans fats, and these cheesy chips contain two types: partially hydrogenated soybean oil and partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil. So how does the company get away with the "zero gram" claim, you ask? The FDA allows manufacturers to market products as trans fat free if they contain less than 0.5 gram of the artery-clogging acids per serving. But get this: The American Heart Association recommends we max out our trans fat intake at about 2 grams per day, so if you're regularly eating foods with 0.49 gram per serving, then you can easily surpass that limit without knowing. That could lead to a host of cardiovascular problems, and one recent Spanish study even linked increased trans fat consumption with a lower quality of life and overall happiness.

The Takeaway: At the risk of belaboring the point: Read the ingredient statement. If you see anything that's been "partially hydrogenated," you have a trans-fatty food in your hand. Set it down and nobody will get hurt, least of all you.

FOOD LABEL LIE #5
Mott's Medleys Fruit and Vegetable Juice

The Crime: Although wholesome by juice standards, this one is promoted to parents as a substitute for real fruits and vegetables. But fruits and vegetables have fiber; Mott's has none.

The Evidence: The Mott's label says that 8 ounces contains 2 servings of fruits and vegetables, and sadly, the USDA agrees. The government's MyPlate considers juice to be a suitable substitute for produce. But here's why it's not: One of the biggest health boons of fruits and vegetables is their fiber, which fills the stomach, slows digestion, and fights disease. According to a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, people who consume the most fiber have a 22 percent lower chance of premature death from any cause. Yet at the current rate of consumption, Americans are getting only about half the fiber they need. A single apple has more than 4 grams of fiber. That's about 4 grams more than a 46-ounce bottle of Mott's Medleys Apple and Carrot Juice Blend.

The Takeaway: Modest amounts of juice can fit into a healthy diet, but it's no substitute for whole produce.

FOOD LABEL LIE #4
Simply Natural Cheetos White Cheddar Puffs

The Crime: Abuse of the term "natural." Last I checked, Cheetos don't grow in the wild.

The Evidence: When was the last time you saw a flowering field of torula yeast? Or how about a fresh crop of maltodextrin? Didn't think so. These cheese puffs consist largely of corn, but they've been processed to the point that no 20th-century farmer would ever recognize them as food. What's more, compared with regular Cheetos Puffs, they only have about 10 fewer calories per serving. Oh, and see those "natural flavors" on the ingredient statement? By FDA standards, those don't even have to relate to the food in question. For all we know, those are tinctures made from bovine bone marrow.

The Takeaway: Except in the instance of some meat products, the FDA doesn't regulate use of the word "natural," leaving the food industry free to define it on its own terms. In 2008, natural products reached $22 billion in sales. Defend yourself by reading the ingredient statement. If you can't pronounce it, it probably ain't natural.

"Natural" doesn't mean all that natural after all.

FOOD LABEL LIE #3
SunnyD
The Crime: The Day-Glo liquid presents itself as a delicious, nutritious alternative to orange juice, but in truth, it's little more than sweetened water.

The Evidence: Look at the label. The vast majority of this bottle consists of water and corn syrup, with less than 2 percent coming from concentrated juice swirled with artificial colors, sweeteners, canola oil, and sodium hexametaphosphate (don't ask). The beverage company bases its vague nutrition claims ("reverse-engineered from the sun"?) on the fact that SunnyD contains 80 percent of your daily recommended vitamin C. But you know what else has 100 percent of your day's vitamin C? A cup of chopped broccoli, a few thick slices of red bell pepper, a medium orange, or a multivitamin.

The Takeaway: "Fruit flavored" is no substitute for real fruit. If you want the full nutritional package, buy fresh, unadulterated produce or at the very least 100 percent juice.

FOOD LABEL LIE #2
Wendy's Natural Cut Fries

The Crime: Wendy's promotes these spuds as a healthy alternative to typical fries the chain's Web site boasts that they're "naturally cut from whole Russet potatoes" and seasoned with "a sprinkle of sea salt." But there's more to it than that.

The Evidence: A quick skim through Wendy's ingredient statement is all it takes to expose these fraudulent spuds. They contain preservatives, added sugars, and hydrogenated oil. Last I checked, there was nothing remotely natural about infusing vegetable oil with hydrogen. Technically, Wendy's isn't lying when it says that these fries are "natural-cut." But it makes one wonder: What would be the unnatural way to cut a potato?

The Takeaway: Restaurants toss out buzzwords like "natural," "fresh," and "wholesome" as a clever way of making not-so-nutritious items seem closer to what you'd make at home. Truth is, food manufacturers haven't found a way to align your health with their profits, and until they do, the onus of healthy eating is on you and you alone.

FOOD LABEL LIE #1
Applebee's Weight Watchers Grilled Jalapeno-Lime Shrimp

The Crime: This Weight Watchers entree carries a heavy burden of guilt for containing a shameful amount of salt.

The Evidence: Applebee's loads this dish with 2,950 milligrams of blood-pressure- spiking sodium, far exceeding the USDA's recommended daily limit of 2,300 milligrams (for some people, like those at risk for hypertension, it's only 1,500 milligrams!). And the Applebee's marketing team has the nerve to put this on the restaurant's Weight Watchers menu? Guffaw! Sadly, Applebee's isn't the only guilty restaurant when it comes to the sins of salt. Chains like Chili's and Cheesecake Factory, for example, also pack egregious amounts of sodium into specialty items geared toward health-conscious eaters.

The Takeaway: In terms of calories, diet or "light" options are usually superior to other items on a chain's menu, but almost all major chain restaurants still take a heavy-handed approach with the salt shaker. If you're going to eat out, make an effort to keep your sodium intake as low as possible for the rest of the day.

Are You Falling for These 10 Food Label Lies?

Sneaky ways manufacturers cash in on your healthy intentions
Charlotte Hilton Andersen
Topics: Diet Tips,fat-free foods,nutrition facts,nutrition labels,nutrition studies,sodium,sugar,sugar-free foods,trans fat

"0 g Trans Fat"

Know it: A mad-scientist project gone wrong, trans fats are created in a lab by partially hydrogenating healthier oils. This process destroys the many good benefits of the original fats. What's worse, consuming trans fats ups your risk for heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Most nutritionists recommend avoiding them altogether, which doesn't sound so hard except current labeling guidelines allow manufacturers to round anything less than 0.5g/serving down to zero. Eat more than a few servings, and you've consumed a significant amount of the Frankenfood.

Avoid it: Anything that says "partially hydrogenated oil," "hydrogenated vegetable oil," or "shortening" on the ingredients list contains trans fats, no matter what the label says.

Fact: What is means is that butter was too fattening and oils were too oily so the foods were either too fatty or too oily to sell when the fat-free fad became popular in our American society, so food Scientists invented a man-made technique of making oils into a solid for product development that would sell fat-free not oily foods on the mass market... This is something your body treats as a POISON in your system that your body does not fight fat naturally until AFTER it finds ways to expel the poison from your body first!!!

Translation: Your body does not do what it is supposed to do. Those products are NOT helping your fat-free lifestyle AT ALL. Instead, your body is STORING FAT while working overtime fighting itself!

"Sugar Free"

Know it: Sugar is fine in moderation, but many processed foods contain much more and in different places&mash;than you'd expect. Since ingredients are required to be listed from most to least on food labels, manufacturers often break up the sugar into smaller amounts of lesser-known sugars, making the food appear healthier. Another issue is that real sugar is often replaced with artificial sweeteners, which can cause bloating and stomach discomfort.

Avoid it: Nutritionally speaking, there's not a huge difference between different types of sneaky sugars so knowing the pseudonyms is half the battle. While there are more than 50 names for the sweet stuff, common tricky ones include brown rice syrup, barley malt, caramel, fructose, fruit juice concentrate, and anything involving corn syrup.

Fact 1: SUGAR FEEDS CANCER! STOP EATING AND DRINKING SO MUCH CRAP RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

Fact 2: We consume 300 times the recommended max of sugar PER DAY!!! Average person in the 1700's consumed 4 LBS PER YEAR VS. 3 LBS PER DAY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the early 1980s, processed food makers began sweetening their foods with high fructose corn syrup after sugar began gaining a bad reputation. Now, the pendulum is swinging the other way and we see food with big labels advertising their lack of HFCS and their inclusion of real sugar. But, how much better is real sugar when it is still highly over-consumed?

Dr Mercola has this to say: Glucose is the form of energy you were designed to run on. Every cell in your body, every bacterium and in fact, every living thing on the Earth uses glucose for energy. But as a country, sucrose is no longer the sugar of choice. It is now fructose. It is not that fructose itself is bad it is the MASSIVE DOSES you are exposed to that make it dangerous.

Indeed sugar is being consumed in massive doses. According to Dr. Mercola:

•1700: The average person consumed approximately 4.9 grams each day (4 pounds of sugar each year)
•1800: The average person consumed approximately 22.4 grams each day (18 pounds of sugar each year)
•1900: The average person consumed approximately 112 grams each day, (90 pounds of sugar each year)
•2009: 50 percent of Americans consumed approximately 227 grams (1/2 pound) of sugar each day around 2009 equating to a 180 pounds each year
The average person consumes 70 grams of fructose each day 300 percent above the recommended amount!!!

HFCS And Real Sugar
Marketing aside, the HFCS and real sugar are similar in sparking negative biological effects. High-fructose corn syrup, sugar no difference, is how Lustig put it in a lecture that I attended in San Francisco last December. The point is they are each bad. Whether it is true or not that HFCS is equally harmful as sugar, the final takeaway is that sugar as a whole is causing countless problems. It is important to note, though, that while both sweeteners are tied to negative health effects, high fructose corn syrup has also been shown to contain mercury while damaging learning abilities. In the end, the advice is to lessen sugar consumption as a whole.

http://naturalsociety.com/sugar-the-toxicity-question-and-what-to-do-about-it

Limit daily sugar to 6 tsps (25 g) for women, 9 tsps (38 g) for men.

That is in line with the World Health Organization's (WHO) recommendation that no more than 10% of an adult's calories and ideally less than 5% should come from added sugar or from natural sugars in honey, syrups and fruit juice. For a 2,000-calorie diet, 5% would be 25 grams.

SODA CAUSES CANCER AND DOES A BUNCH OF OTHER HORRIBLE THINGS TO YOUR BODY!!!!!

BOTH PEPSI AND COKE EAT AWAY CAR BATTERY ACID IN A COUPLE SECONDS!!!!!!!!! I HAVE DONE THIS TEST MYSELF. IMAGINE WHAT SODA DOES TO YOUR THROAT AND STOMACH AND INTESTINES!!!!!!

A growing number of public schools signing marketing deals with Soda companies!!!!!!!

New research strongly suggests they're even worse than anyone realized. Soda has been linked to:

Cancer: Soft drinks are very acidic, especially Cola. In order to neutralize a glass of Cola, it takes 32 glasses of pure filtered water. It is well known by the medical profession that disease loves acid. If we could get our cells to maintain a normal pH (slightly alkaline), cancer could not grow in our bodies. Cancer can't live in an oxygen-rich environment. Cola drinks make our bodies poor in oxygen

Osteoporosis: The bubbles and fizz in soft drinks can potentially burn human insides. This is caused by the phosphoric acid and carbon dioxide. The phosphorus in the acid upsets the body's calcium-phosphorus ratio and dissolves calcium out of the bones. This can eventually result in osteoporosis

ADHD: Supposing you knew that Soft Drinks could cause your brain to disintegrate, would you drink them? More than a million children today are afflicted with cerebral lesions (injury to the brain that causes sudden discharge of excessive nervous energy) and other afflictions caused by Soft Drinks!

Obesity: Sugar in Soda and Cola Soft Drinks will cause an increase in "empty calories". Empty calories are those foods and beverages which are high in calories but offer little or no nutritional value. This causes people to eat more because they always feel hungry. Their body is telling them that they need to feed the cells. Never finding the proper nutrients, the hunger becomes a vicious circle resulting in obesity

Diabetes: A diet high in Sugar, such as that found in Soda and Cola Soft Drinks, will cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket. The pancreas works to level out the high sugar levels by producing insulin. If Soda and Cola Soft Drinks are consumed at a high level on a daily basis, this will cause the pancreas to "wear out".

Heart and Circulatory Disease: These products with caffeine artificially stimulate the body and increase the heart rate. This artificial stimulation temporarily arouses the intellect and fatigue seems to disappear, but shortly the "sugar high" dissipates. Soda and Cola Soft Drinks containing caffeine raise blood pressure, increase heart rate, and cause plaque to form in the arteries (cholesterol).

Soda and Cola Soft Drink Facts

There are many effects from consuming caffeine-laden Soda and Cola Soft Drinks. They include increased incidences of bladder and stomach cancer, diabetes and damage to the stomach lining. Caffeine contributes to or causes birth defects in children, at least six kinds of cancer and provides the body with zero nutrition. Colas range between 34 and 49 mg. of caffeine per 12 ounces. Comparing Colas, Mountain Dew topped out at 49 mg. per 12 ounces, while the lowest was Diet Pepsiand Pepsi.

Sodas contain the artificial colorings, Amaranth (red), Bordeaux (brown), Orange I (yellow), and Ponceau (scarlet) dyes, all of which are unfit for human consumption. How much of each of these artificial colorings are in these drinks? Your guess is as good as mine, as this information is NOT available to us.

Soda and Cola Soft Drinks have much in common with hard liquor, claimed the co-discoverer of insulin, Dr. Charles Best. Cirrhosis of the liver has been found among teenagers who drink large quantities of soft drinks, as well as among chronic alcoholics.

In a report the FDA Consumer, October 1980, we read, "Most soft drinks, including the Cola and pepper-type drinks contain caffeine and are the number one beverage in the United States today, with coffee second." Caffeine is a drug, which stimulates the central nervous system. In the amounts presently being consumed, it can cause insomnia, nervousness, irritability, anxiety and disturbances in the heart rate and rhythm. Cola and pepper-like drinks account for 80 to 90 percent of the caffeine added to foods today. Its long-term effects on people are not clearly known.

In a public announcement regarding caffeine's possible dangers to unborn children, past FDA Commissioner Dr. Jere Goyan urged pregnant women to avoid the use of caffeine products. He stated, "So while further evidence is being gathered on the possible relationship between caffeine and birth defects, a prudent and protective mother-to-be will want to put caffeine on her list of unnecessary substances which she should avoid." Goyan goes on to say, "...that as a general rule, pregnant women should avoid all substances that have drug-like effects."

Cola Drinks contain caramel coloring, which, according to some researchers, has genetic effects and is a cancer-causing suspect.

Olyethylene Glycol Is Used As An Ingredient

Glycol is used in anti-freeze in automobiles and as an oil solvent. Have you tried pouring Cola Drinks on your windshield in a snow or ice storm? Try it! You will discover that Cola Drinks will keep the windshield from freezing over with ice.

Soft Drinks use predominately three types of sweeteners - Saccharin or Aspartame in the diet type and Sugar, Cane Syrup or Corn Syrup (HFCS) in the regular soft drinks. These substances enhance taste appeal and are advertised as "refreshing" and "high energy". The truth is that Saccharin has been shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals and Nutra-sweet and Equal are linked to convulsions, depression, insomnia, irritability, weakness, dizziness, migraine headaches, mood changes and mental retardation as well as Lupus, MS, fibromyalgia and a whole slew of autoimmune diseases.

Try pouring Coke over an extracted baby tooth or a 10-penny nail and see it totally dissolve in a few days!

Diet Sodas that are low in calories are high in sodium. Six ounces of regular Pepsi-Cola has 5 mg. of sodium; Diet Pepsi has 31 mg. Classic Coke has 19 mg. of sodium.

Phosphorus found in Soda and Cola Soft Drinks (pH 2.5) renders hydrochloric acid (pH 4.5) in the stomach ineffective. This promotes indigestion, bloating and gassiness. Carbon dioxide is a waste product exhaled by humans, but they ingest it when they drink Soda and Cola Soft Drinks.

Just for laughs, try placing extracted human teeth in a Soda or Cola Soft Drink. You will find that within two days, the teeth become very soft, and the enamel surface will have lost much of its calcium.

In your lifetime, you and your family will be exposed to countless advertisements, commercials and "scientific" studies designed to promote meat, dairy products, sugar, white flour and other processed foods, as well as drugs such as coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, and Soda and Cola Soft Drinks. People are dying every day because of what they eat and drink, which includes Fast Food (Fat Food) and Soda and Cola Soft Drinks.

It is the exact same thing with cigarettes. Cigarettes are government sanctioned mass murder suicide for profit that the US government makes billions of dollars off of every year while our air is polluted with hundreds of chemicals, poisons. "Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals, including 43 known cancer-causing (carcinogenic) compounds and 400 other toxins. These include nicotine, tar, and carbon monoxide, as well as formaldehyde, ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, arsenic, and DDT. Nicotine is highly addictive." www.quitsmokingsupport.com/whatsinit.htm.

What's In a Cigarette?

There are approximately 600 ingredients in cigarettes. When burned, they create more than 7,000 chemicals. At least 69 of these chemicals are known to cause cancer, and many are poisonous.

Many of these chemicals also are found in consumer products, but these products have warning labels. While the public is warned about the danger of the poisons in these products, there is no such warning for the toxins in tobacco smoke.

Here are a few of the chemicals in tobacco smoke and other places they are found:

Acetone found in nail polish remover
Acetic Acid an ingredient in hair dye
Ammonia a common household cleaner
Arsenic used in rat poison
Benzene found in rubber cement
Butane used in lighter fluid
Cadmium active component in battery acid
Carbon Monoxide released in car exhaust fumes
Formaldehyde embalming fluid
Hexamine found in barbecue lighter fluid
Lead used in batteries
Naphthalene an ingredient in mothballs
Methanol a main component in rocket fuel
Nicotine used as insecticide
Tar material for paving roads
Toluene - used to manufacture paint

http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/smoking-facts/e-cigarettes-and-lung-health.html

http://www.lung.org/stop-smoking/smoking-facts/e-cigarettes-and-lung-health.html

Following the 2016 announcement allowing FDA oversight of tobacco products, e-cigarette manufacturers must register with FDA by August 8, 2016, and then will have two additional years to submit an application to remain in the marketplace. Until that time, the nearly 500 brands and 7,700 flavors of e-cigarettes will remain on the market before FDA is able to fully evaluate them. Until FDA's evaluation is done, there are very few ways for anyone other than the manufacturers to know what chemicals are contained in e-liquids, or how e-cigarette use might affect health, whether in the short term or in the long run.

The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that e-cigarettes can expose users to several potentially harmful chemicals, including nicotine, carbonyl compounds and volatile organic compounds.1

Nicotine is an addictive substance, and almost all e-cigarettes contain nicotine. Even some products that claim not to have any nicotine in them may still contain it. For instance, initial FDA lab tests conducted in 2009 found that cartridges labeled as nicotine-free had traceable levels of nicotine. A 2014 study found little consistency in the amount of nicotine delivered by e-cigarettes of the same brand and strength.2 Similarly, another 2014 study found that the amount of nicotine in e-liquid refills is often substantially different from the amount listed on the package.3

Newer e-cigarette devices, especially "tank" styles, with higher voltage also deliver a greater concentration of nicotine. This matters because the more nicotine used, the greater the potential for addiction.

Nicotine use has been associated with lasting cognitive and behavioral impairments, including effects on working memory and attention.4

We don't presently know what is in e-cigarettes. However, in initial lab tests conducted in 2009 the FDA found detectable levels of toxic cancer-causing chemicals, including an ingredient used in anti-freeze, in two leading brands of e-cigarettes and 18 various cartridges. A review of studies found that levels of toxins in e-cigarette aerosol varied considerably within and between brands. A 2014 study found that aerosol from e-cigarettes with a higher voltage level contains more formaldehyde, another carcinogen with the potential to cause cancer. The findings are alarming, and underscores why the American Lung Association called so urgently for FDA oversight of these products.

Flavors in e-cigarettes are also a cause for concern. Not only are flavors used to target kids, but they may be harmful on their own. E-cigarette and flavor manufacturers and marketers may suggest that the flavor ingredients used in e-cigarettes are safe because they have FEMA GRASTM status for use in food, but such statements are false and misleading. The reality is that FEMA GRASTM status only applies to food, meaning it's safe to eat, and does not apply to inhaling through e-cigarettes.

Diacetyl, a buttery flavored chemical often added to food products such as popcorn, caramel, and dairy products, has also been found in some e-cigarettes with flavors. Diacetyl can cause a serious and irreversible lung disease commonly known as "popcorn lung."5

Large doses of nicotine have a potential for poisoning, with symptoms beginning with nausea and vomiting in cases of acute toxicity and progressing to seizures and respiratory depression in cases of severe nicotine poisoning. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that ingestion of e-cigarette liquids containing nicotine can cause acute toxicity and possibly death.1

As public spaces increasingly become smokefree, anecdotal reports show some people are attempting to use e-cigarettes indoors and in public spaces which are smokefree, like bars, restaurants and even public transit.

While e-cigarettes do not contain smoke, they do expose others to secondhand emissions. Two studies have found formaldehyde, benzene and tobacco-specific nitrosamines (all carcinogens) coming from those secondhand emissions. Other studies have shown that chemicals in the emissions contain formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and other potential toxins. The U.S. Surgeon General has concluded that e-cigarette aerosol is not harmless, and can contain harmful and potentially harmful chemicals, including nicotine.1

The American Lung Association supports prohibiting the use of e-cigarettes in worksites and public places, and including e-cigarettes under smokefree laws with other tobacco products. Currently, nine states, the District of Columbia and hundreds of communities have prohibited e-cigarette use in the same places where smoking is already prohibited.

Many e-cigarette companies market their product as a tool to help smokers quit. However, the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research has not approved any e-cigarette as a safe or effective method to help smokers quit.

In 2015, 58.8 percent of the people who recently used e-cigarettes also currently smoked conventional cigarettes.6 The U.S. Surgeon General has found that even smoking a few cigarettes a day is dangerous to your health.

The U.S. Public Health Service has found that the seven therapies approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in combination with individual, group or phone cessation counseling are the most effective way to help smokers quit. Until and unless the FDA approves a specific electronic nicotine delivery system or e-cigarette as safe and effective for use as a tobacco cessation aid, the American Lung Association does not support their use for cessation or any direct or implied claims that e-cigarettes help smokers quit.
